We live in a beautiful, peaceful spot on the planet and look forward to you joining us. This is a great opportunity to gain knowledge, learn new skills, get your hands dirty, have fun, and connect deeply to the earth.

There are three options to work and learn here at Heartsong Farm & Lost Nation Orchard: Farm Intern, Work-Study Positions, Volunteer Days.

Farm Intern Position:

The Farm Intern position is primarily focused on learning to manage and maintain an organic apple orchard.  Support and guidance will be offered every week during work days. The Farm Intern is also invited to participate in our Holistic Orchard Apprentice program tuition free. The HOA program includes Michael’s books, The Apple Grower and the Holistic Orchard as well as videos of Michael teaching in our orchard. Expert Guest Orchardists come one Friday a month for eight months for a day of hands-on teaching in the orchard with a group of apprentices.

Work and learning on the farm is diverse and seasonal. Horticulture care for our apple orchard, spreading wood chips, pruning, scything, planting trees, picking apples, monitoring insect traps, making cider, and spraying organic orchard sprays with a tractor.

The Farm Internship is a paid position requiring 2-3 days of work weekly at $15- $17 an hour depending on experience. The position commitment is for 6-8 months, which is negotiable. The Holistic Orchard Apprenticeship group starts on March 14.  Accommodations on the farm are open to discussion; there are a lot of possibilities.

Farm Intern Requirements include:

  • Have one season of experience working on a farm or equivalent outdoor work experience
  • Have good stamina and an ability to complete physically demanding work
  • Able to keep a good pace and practice time management
  • Have a positive attitude and a sense of humor; we like to keep a lighthearted and fun team atmosphere
  • Able to be patient and flexible as tasks and priorities change. The nature of farming is that things can shift with little notice due to weather, etc.
  • Previous tractor experience is not required but preferred. The applicant must be willing to learn and operate the tractor on a regular basis.
  • Have a strong work ethic, be able to work side by side with us and on your own at times.

Work Study Positions:

Our programs teach valuable life skills and we like to make them accessible for people who would not be able to access them otherwise.  Our Work-Study positions offer an opportunity for people to pay part of the tuition for one of our eight month courses and to learn as they work helping us on the farm. There are a few positions still available for our Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times course and for our Holistic Orchard Apprenticeship program. Email us for all the details if you are interested.

WWOOF  (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms)

We are members of WWOOF USA, a non-profit organization who helps connect people who want to learn about farming through volunteering with host farms. You can volunteer directly with me, or through WWOOF, if you are interested in touring different farms around the country.  If you are local, you can schedule work/learning days with us. There are also opportunities for extended visits for those that are travelers.

About Heartsong Farm & Lost Nation Orchard:

We love and tend a 57-acre diversified farm near the stunning White Mountains of Northern NH.   Most of our land is woodlands with around four acres under cultivation. We primarily grow organic apples and other fruits as well.  We have over 350 fruit trees with over 100 varieties and manage the orchard holistically.

As herbalists we grow and wildcraft a wide variety of medicinal herbs, which we make tinctures, teas, salves, syrups, body products and herbal sprays for our gardens and orchard.  We also endeavor to grow much of our food for the year. We dry, can, freeze and ferment food as well as make herbal medicine.

We love sharing these life skills and offer holistic education workshops and retreats (yoga, Qigong, herbal medicine, holistic orcharding, energy work, etc.)  to the public. Farm interns are welcome to take some classes as part of their benefits.

Our family has lived on this land for almost 40 years and have always used organic methods, which we call holistic. In fact, some of our Holistic Orcharding techniques are renown. Our intentions are to co-create and partner with the Earth focusing on building health and balance in our ecosystem and producing vibrant fruit, herbs and vegetables. We also believe local agriculture, small farms, and food justice are integral to our community and world!

Furry and feathered friends include a dog, a cat, laying chickens, and sheep. Neighbors include fox, deer, moose, bears, and many other wild friends.
